OUTDOOR ELECTRIC GRILL

Electric grills work via a heating element being either within or directly below the cooking surface. That then radiates heat without flame, which replaces the usual effect of the gas or natural flame in a grill. Electric grills come in several types; some can be used indoors and outdoors, while other are purely for outdoor use. Electric grills have become steadily more popular over recent years, as people begin to move away from the more temperamental traditional outdoor barbeque.

These grills have also become more popular for indoor cooking, as a healthier alternative, as the design encourages fat run off which makes the meat leaner and healthier.

One particular type which is becoming increasingly popular is the ceramic plate burner. These plates radiate heat and cook through infrared radiation. This is actually similar to the way ceramic hair straighteners work! These are different from traditional electric grills which use metal to heat the food. The ceramic type produce more heat than a traditional metal grill and you get more heat for your electricity, this can be useful in situations where you only have to access to a limited amount of power but want to cook faster than snail pace.

There are a large number of advantages to outdoor electric grills over gas and charcoal burners. Traditional barbeques or grills can take a very long time to heat up; but an electric grill takes a fraction of the time. To get cooking heat from a fire can take up to half an hour, whereas an electric grill will heat up in minutes.
Second advantage is that it is cleaner. Traditional charcoal burning grills in particularly have a lot of bi-product such as ash and a large amount of smoke. These can make the whole operation dirty and unpleasant, whereas an electric grill has none of these disadvantages. It is also easier to clean!

The final major advantage is that electricity rarely runs out. Gas can be hard to obtain, and expensive, and buying charcoal or wood can be a pain, but all you need for the electric grill is access to a plug. Of course this does mean that the grill is not quite so portable, but if you want it for the garden they are perfect.

Disadvantages are lack of traditional flavour, a lot of the attraction of traditional outdoor cooking is a smoky 'bbq' flavour. Unfortunately the electric and even the gas grills don't provide the same effect. It is also less traditional for outdoor cooking, and can just end up feeling like you have moved the kitchen outside.
